Ireland had the fi rst state-sponsored system of public insane asylums decades before any other country in the world. Given British imperial and economic policy at the time, this development is surprising. This talk will discuss how and why this came to be, and how it profoundly infl uenced the development of mental health care, and Irish and British history.
