Fitness and Sports

All fitness classes are on-going, meaning they meet every week. When a 10 class session is purchased, they can be used at any 10 sessions, consecutively or periodically - whenever it is convenient. That way, you don't lose classes if you are out of town or have a conflict!

    League play is reserved for Next members. Membership is to be completed online or in person at Next before signing up for the golf leagues.

    Registion is online only. To secure your spot in a league, payment must be made at the time of registration

    If you would like to sign up to be a sub for either league (or both leagues), again, you must be a member of Next and you must register as a sub online as well. There is no payment involved for subs until the day of play.

  • Stretch & Relax

    NEW! STRETCH & RELAX with Caryn Ciagne  

    Every Monday from 9:15 to 10:15 am

    Caryn will guide you through gentle stretch class exploring longer holds and slow range of motion along with a focus on breathing to promote relaxation. We will explore postures on your back, hands and knees, stomach and seated. There will be minimal standing. A chair can be close by for extra support. Focus on increased fl exibility, core strength, balance and mindfulness for greater comfort and calm in one's body and presence

  • Limber Up

    Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday

    No fee drop-in.

    Take part in low-impact, modified movements, from an instructional DVD that meets individual needs for toning, strengthening and improved physical, mental, emotional and cardiovascular health. Chair and standing exercises using aerobic steps, weights, stretch bands and foam balls offering a variety of fitness options.

  • Line Dancing - Join the Fun, at Next!

    Walk-ins welcome. $10 for a series of 10 to be used at your convenience. 

    Christine Stewart has been teaching line dancing for 13 years. She loves her work and invites you to join her in exercising body and mind as you move to different types of music and learn new steps and dances.  Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes.

  • Afternoon Pickleball

  • Low Impact Aerobics

    Ongoing Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 10:00 am with Laura Karmanos.

    Start your day in a low-impact way! We’ll get things warmed up with some small movements and stretching, then transition into some basic moves to get our heart rates up. We’ll add in some strength, balance, seated and standing core work — then end the session with a cool down and more stretching. This class is for anyone who is looking for a great workout without impacting their joints. In these classes you will have the opportunity to get stronger, move longer and be ready for life by implementing strength, cardio, mental as well as physical balance training. 

    Laura has been teaching group fitness and personal training for decades and specializes in strength and mobility training for all levels, including older adults. She is certified through The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

    You may have heard it in the news or from one of our program  presenters here at Next: Strength Training is important for everyone, but especially for older adults like us! This full body strength class will help increase strength, improve balance and mobility and help  you maintain muscle and bone mass. This class is beginner friendly.  We will use light weights and pilates balls and we’ll work on form throughout the classes. Please bring a mat.

    A slow yet strong flow practice suitable for all who may be interested in expanding their yoga practice. This class will explore sun salutations, traditional standing postures, balance, seated and supine to strengthen, stretch and calm one’s presence to be ready for the day. Please bring a yoga mat, water for hydration, and optional towel, yoga blocks and strap.

Tai Chi is especially good for those with mobility issues as it can be done effectively seated. This class, taught by Cheryl Goodwin, Tai Chi for Health Institute certified instructor, is appropriate for all ages, body types and abilities. Cheryl is certified in the areas of Tai Chi for Arthritis, Tai Chi for Fall Prevention, and Seated Tai Chi.

  • Barre Balance New!

    Instructor: Karen Lutz, E-RYT. First try complimentary. Classes sold in packs of ten..do not need to be used consecutively.

    A low impact practice at the barre improving muscle tone, balance, flexibility and strength. Work with optional weights and stretch bands. All levels are welcome as we move at our own pace. Enjoy ballet and yoga inspired movements both dynamic as well as holding.

  • The Art of Judo

    Tuesday, July 22, 2025 | 11:00-12:30pm

    Michael Milicia, Student of Saito-dojo

    This presentation will describe and explore the art and philosophy of Judo. Michael will trace Judo’s history and evolution and will delve into the meaning of the word Judo itself, not just as a sport or martial art, but as a guiding philosophy that holds different significance for different people. He will also touch on how the principles of Judo resonate with and parallel other major philosophical traditions throughout history, and how its practice can benefit followers of different faiths. Finally, Michael will describe the core techniques that define judo as a martial art; this portion will be accompanied by a live demonstration. Michael is presently an undergraduate Philosophy student at Oakland University and intends to apply to the International Budo University in Japan for a one-year study abroad program next year to advance his knowledge of judo.

  • 2025 Golf Classic to Benefit Next!

    Friday, September 12, 2025 | 1:00-6:00pm

    The 2025 Golf Classic to Benefit Next will be held Friday, September 12th at Springdale Golf Course.  - Registration sbegins July 7th! 

     

    Registration begins at 1:00 pm along with a preview and open bidding on the amazing silent auction -  and the putting contest.

    Nine-hole shotgun start with a cart at 2:00 pm with a scramble format complete with contests. Prizes for the first-place team, longest drive, closest to the pin, and don't miss out - the Hole in One cash prize, $5,000!! 

    Golf will be followed by drinks and appetizers where the silent auction will remain open for bidding - Look for rounds of golf at area courses including Orchard Lake CC and the Detroit Golf Club among other popular courses, restaurant certificates, one of a kind gifts and many other wonderful items! A delicious dinner will be served as the contest winners are announced!
