Explore the history and mission of the Heidelberg Project, key installations and the elements of the canvas at the site, as well as the philosophy behind Tyree Guyton’s work. This is a docent-led outdoor walking tour of about a block and a half, and approximately 30 minutes in length, (with additional time for picture taking). This tour runs rain or shine, please dress accordingly. After the tour we will head to the "highly requested" Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum. Sixteen years ago Olayami Dabls came to the corner of Grand River and West Grand Blvd with a vision to create a space for his community to understand the immense power of their African heritage. Occupying almost an entire city block, the Dabls Mbad African Bead Museum houses 18 outdoor installations as well as the African Bead Gallery, N'kisi House and African Language Wall. Born of his own visual cosmology, Dabls' MBAD African Bead Museum is a quiet revolution that sparks a vital conversation with global and local audiences. The sculpture gardens and bead gallery draw thousands of visitors every year from around the world. Each day, the guestbook is fi lled by artists, writers, musicians, mothers and fathers. From people in the neighborhood to internationally renowned artists and Hollywood icons including Wesley Snipes and Quentin Tarantino, MBAD African Bead Museum has become a home and an inspiration to many. Please take note that the bead museum is NOT ADA COMPLIANT! If you are seeking an adventure, this trip is for you!
