Van Gogh in America celebrates the DIA’s status as the fi rst public museum in the United States to purchase a painting by Vincent Van Gogh, his Self Portrait (1887). On the 100th anniversary of its acquisition, this exclusive exhibition includes 70 authentic Van Gogh works from around the world and tells the fascinating story of America’s introduction to this iconic artist. In celebration of Dia de Muertos, the Detroit Institute of Arts, in partnership with Detroit's Mexican Consulate, invite you to explore a community exhibition of ofrenda altars. In Mexico, and other Latin American countries, the Day of the Dead is the time of the year to celebrate the lives of close relatives, friends or community members who have passed away. Objects important to lost loved ones are collected and incorporated into elaborate displays. The time allotted for our DIA visit includes a self-guided tour of Van Gogh in America, and the Dia de Muertos exhibits. Tickets have not yet been released (at the time of print) for the Van Gogh exhibit, so the price may fluctuate. If you choose, you may use some of the time for lunch in the café on your own.
