Hurricanes and Society

Next meeting: Thursday, December 10, 2026 | 6:00pm-7:00pm
Thomas Bianchette, Oakland University
Each year hurricanes wreak havoc on coastal communities, causing catastrophic losses of human life, habitat destruction, property losses, and costing billions of dollars annually across the globe. Thomas Bianchette is a professor in the Environmental Sciences program, and founded the Coastal Hazard and Environmental Reconstruction Lab at Oakland University. Come to Next to learn about the impact of hurricanes on society, and how scientists can apply innovative methods to find evidence of ancient hurricanes in sediment archives. This lecture is the first in a series of lectures on sustainability in partnership with Oakland University. This program is generously sponsored by Jewish Senior Life.
