Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Thursday, July 28, 2016 | 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Dr. Dale Partin, Ph.D. returns to Next to discuss the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The discovery of exoplanets orbiting distant stars has now become routine. Optimists are making headlines, creating an atmosphere of expectancy that alien life will soon be found. This sense of anticipation has been supported by the Principle of Mediocrity which observes that there is nothing special about our place in the universe and by the evidence that life started relatively quickly on earth after it became habitable. However, there is a history of failed predictions that we would detect alien life within ten years. Dr. Partin has a Master of Science degree in physics, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and is a fellow of the American Physical Society. He currently teaches astronomy at Macomb Community College.
