Professor Bruce Zellers, returns to Next to discuss how as the 19th century ended and the 20th century began, concern about the direction American society mounted. Industrialization and urbanization caused alarm. It was rural America, the Populists, who first expressed alarm, but it was the progressive movement that generated real changes. Progressivism reflected the values of the emerging urban middle class. The progressive leaders — Jane Addams, Robert LaFollette, and Teddy Roosevelt — have become reforming legends. Are they models for our own times?
